Some 100 participants at Plenary Meeting in Ottawa
Ottawa, September 15, 2009. Some 100 participants from 22 countries of the Americas participated in the Sixth Plenary Meeting of FIPA which ended today with the approval of several recommendations and the re-election of Brazilian Congressman Luiz Carlos Hauly as president of FIPA for another two years. OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza acted as keynote speaker during the opening ceremony. For the first time, delegations from China and Russia participated as observers. More ...

A first in Sudan: National, Southern Sudan MPs focus on financial crisis together
Sudanese legislators from both the National Assembly and Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) recently put aside partisan differences to assess the impact that the global financial crisis is having on the people they represent.
Their initiative was significant not only for its result – a strong set of recommendations – but also for its example: the first time a National Assembly committee delegation has held a joint workshop with opposite numbers at the SSLA. (More ...)

A Canadian Parliamentary delegation visited China, April 12-18, 2009, to exchange views and explore ideas with their Chinese counterparts on the challenges in strengthening the oversight role of parliament and its committees and ensuring the accountability of government to citizens. The Parliamentary Centre would like to congratulate Marie-Edith Hilaire, Program Officer PAPH and Las Americas, who was recently awarded by ENAP, the Public Administration University, recognition of distinction as a young public administrator of the future. Ms. Hilaire was presented this award by Mr. Bernard Landry, former Premier of Québec (2001-2003), on April 9, 2009, for her academic achievements in public administration, including her professional path at the level of international development.

On behalf of the Parliamentary Center, I would like to personally express my most sincere sympathy to the people of Haiti following the earthquake that seriously affected the country. We particularly want to express our condolences to the parliamentarians and the Chambers personnel in this terrible tragedy.
The Parliamentary center remains committed to doing everything it can to support the Haitian People during this humanitarian crisis and the reconstruction period.

Governor General of Canada Extends Vice-Regal Patronage to the Parliamentary Centre |
|
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada, has extended vice-regal patronage to the Parliamentary Centre for the duration of her mandate. The Governor General actively endorses the objectives of select organizations by formally granting them patronage, thereby providing them with the name and prestige of the vice-regal office. |
