The Parliamentary Centre in Ghana

Fishermen mending their nets in Jamestown

The Parliamentary Centre benefits from a long-standing and active relationship with the Parliament of Ghana , with whom it has interacted in capacity-building efforts on governance since 1994. Building on this history, The Ghana Parliamentary Committee Support Project Phase 2 (GPCSPII) aims to strengthen accountability, transparency and participation in the Parliamentary governance of Ghana, with particular attention to achieving more effective poverty-reduction efforts in the country by strengthening key committees related to poverty reduction efforts in Ghana. Its multifaceted set of mechanisms to build committee capacity and impact include annual workshop retreats for the committees, the provision of Information Resource Coordinators as liaison for the committees, PRSP monitoring initiatives, community civil society linkage initiatives in the North, external linkage activities and a responsive training and policy studies fund.

The Parliament of Ghana is also a key partner of the Centre’s Africa-Canada Parliamentary Strengthening Program , through a presence on the program’s Coordinating Council, participation of the Gender and Children Committee in the Poverty Reduction Network and active involvement of Ghanaian MPs in the Gender Equality Network and APNAC.

Located a stone’s throw from the Parliament of Ghana, the Africa Poverty Reduction Office (APRO) houses the African Parliamentary Network on Poverty Reduction as well as the Ghana Parliamentary Committee Support Project. The APRO is meant to be both a field office and a resource centre to serve parliamentarians in Ghana and across Africa involved in poverty reduction efforts.
