PRSPs in Africa : Parliaments and Economic Policy Performance

This report published by the Parliamentary Centre and GTZ presents the findings of a rapid appraisal review of PRSPs - undertaken in Ghana, Niger, Malawi and Tanzania in early 2004 - designed to provide a broad, first-hand overview of how the PRSP process functions in these four representative countries. More specifically, the review focussed on examining parliamentary role on monitoring and evaluation, representation of the poor (including dissemination of information and creating understanding), and economic policy-making.

Africa Poverty Reduction Office opened in Accra

The Africa Poverty Reduction Office was officially opened in April, 2004 and houses the African Parliamentary Poverty Reduction Network as well as the bilateral Ghana Parliamentary Committee Support Project. The APRO is meant to be both a field office and a resource centre to serve parliamentarians in Ghana and across Africa involved in poverty reduction efforts.

Niger, Ghana and ZambiaTurn to Canada for Ideas

Delegations of MPs from Niger, Ghana and Zambia visited Canada in the spring, in a series of study tours organized in the context of the ACPSP. The Committees met with their Canadian counterparts in Parliament, NGOs and government departments with the goal of increasing their respective committees’ capacity to effectively perform their oversight role.
