Parliamentary Centre in Sudan
Peacebuilding and the Strengthening of Parliamentary Institutions Project
Project Overview
At the invitation of the parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and with the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Parliamentary Centre undertook work in 2005-06 to assess the role of legislatures in building peace in Sudan. The Centre consulted extensively with both the National Assembly in Khartoum and the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly in Juba, as well as with civil society organizations. More detailed needs assessments were subsequently conducted with parliamentary committees and parliamentary staff.
In January 2007, the Parliamentary Centre signed a Contribution Agreement with CIDA for Peacebuilding and Strengthening Parliamentary Institutions in Sudan, a project designed to promote peace and the practice of parliamentary democracy by strengthening legislative capacity. With staff based in Juba, Khartoum and Ottawa, the project is now being implemented and aims to achieve three outcomes: improved oversight and legislative review by selected committees, provision of improved services by staff, and increased equality between women and men in parliamentary policy-making.

A first in Sudan: National, Southern Sudan MPs focus on financial crisis together |
|

Sudanese legislators from both the National Assembly and Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) recently put aside partisan differences to assess the impact that the global financial crisis is having on the people they represent.
Their initiative was significant not only for its result – a strong set of recommendations – but also for its example: the first time a National Assembly committee delegation has held a joint workshop with opposite numbers at the SSLA. (More ...) |

Sudanese women MPs in gender and governance feature |
|
(Excerpt)
“… Sudanese women parliamentarians formed their caucus less than two years ago, but as members explain, “It was a baby born with teeth.” They worked with civil society to achieve a quota guaranteeing women a minimum of 25 percent of the seats in the National Assembly. Members reviewed the budget to ensure its sensitivity to gender issues. They convened a conference with women legislators in state and local bodies from throughout the country. Now looking ahead to elections scheduled for later this year, they’re traveling around Sudan to encourage other women to vote and run for office...” ( More) |
